The Maharashtra Congress is gearing up for a major reorganisation of its state executive committee, as the party seeks to address intramural fighting and prepare for upcoming elections. A report from senior leader Ramesh Chennithala is expected to inform of the changes, with some key leaders set to be replaced.
One possible change is the replacement of H K Patil as the in-charge of Maharashtra Congress. Despite criticism from top state officials, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole may continue in his position. Patole, however, has been told to keep his distance from other senior officials and to not criticising the NCP and Shiv Sena.
Another significant change is expected in the Mumbai Congress, where city's party president Bhai Jagtap is set to lose his position. The party is seeking a fresh face for the city unit ahead of the BMC elections, and Jagtap's failure to capitalise on his opportunity more than two years ago has made him vulnerable.
When Chandrakant Handore, the party's top option for the position, lost in the legislative council elections held in June 2022, the leadership was distressed. The party was embarrassed by Jagtap's win in the legislative council elections as the second option. Potential candidates to replace Jagtap include Chandrakant Handore, Varsha Gaikwad, Milind Deora, Sanjay Nirupam, Amarjit Singh Manhas, and Ganesh Kumar Yadav.
The party is hoping that a new leader can bring fresh energy and perspective to the Mumbai unit, which has struggled in recent years.
