The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Elections are polls of members to the civic body which governs Greater Mumbai, the financial capital city of India. The BMC elections 2022 were likely to happen in late March or early April 2022. However, reports are rife that the elections have been postponed for six months.

In BMC elections you choose your corporators who are directly related to you.

The election of corporators is done on less population than that of MLA or MP, so the corporator has time to listen to the complaints of more and more people.

Many tasks like drinking water, infrastructure, town planning, waste classification, cleaning and repair of drains, cleaning of drainage lines, property tax, house construction work come under BMC, for which corporators are elected by the public.

Many more things like Fire services, public health, sanitary protection, parks, cemeteries, registration of births and deaths, registration of marriages, are also taken care of by the BMC.To contest the election of corporator, you must be at least 21 years of age, while to contest the election of MLA and MP, the age limit is at least 25 years.

Moreover, it has also come to light that the municipal corporation elections witness low voter turnout. According to reports, there are certain wards of Mumbai Municipal Corporations where the voter turnout in 2012 elections was as low as 29 per cent. This underlines the fact that the voter turnout in metropolis are historically lower than the medium size town and rural areas.
