Maharashtra: Sanjay Kumar takes charge as chief secretary, Kunte given additional charge of home department

Kumar’s tenure as the chief secretary will remain for eight months. However, his stint as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Home department was supposed to end on February 28, 2021.

Sanjay Kumar, the 1984-batch IAS officer, on Tuesday took charge as the new chief secretary of Maharashtra after Ajoy Mehta’s tenure finally ended on July 30. Mehta who is also an IAS officer of the 1984-batch will take up his next role as the principal advisor to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. 

Mehta remains the longest-serving chief secretary of Maharashtra. He was supposed to retire in September last year but was given an extension of total nine months which ended on June 30. 

Now, Mehta is all set to serve as the principal advisor to CM in the backdrop of the financial and COVID-19 crisis. The CM secretariat had expressed the need for an officer with experience. Mehta is considered a close bureaucratic aide to the Chief Minister.

Kumar has taken charge as Maharashtra Chief Secretary at a time when the state is under the grip of the coronavirus outbreak. He said that the effective implementation of the measure to control the COVID-19, revival of economy and planning for the Kharif season will be on his priority. 

Kumar’s tenure as the chief secretary will remain for eight months. However, his stint as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Home department was supposed to end on February 28, 2021. 

Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary (General Administration) Sitaram Kunte was given the additional charge of the Home Department. It was speculated that Kunte was in the race to become chief secretary of Maharashtra.
