Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has strongly criticised the Maharashtra government over the alleged assault on doctors and healthcare workers at KDMC's Shastrinagar Hospital in Kalyan-Dombivli. He demanded the immediate arrest of Shiv Sena (Shinde) corporator Ramesh Mhatre, his disqualification as corporator, and strict action to send a clear message that attacks on healthcare professionals will not be tolerated.
Addressing the media, Thackeray urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to act against the accused despite him being a member of the ruling alliance. He also said that the accused should be publicly held accountable, stressing that violence against doctors and nurses cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Backing the doctors' actions, Thackeray explained that Shastrinagar Hospital does not have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Since the woman had delivered a premature baby via C-section, doctors advised her family to shift the newborn to another hospital equipped with specialised neonatal care. He questioned why the situation escalated into violence when the doctors had only acted in the patient's best medical interest.
According to reports, the incident took place on Tuesday, when Ramesh Mhatre and his supporters allegedly entered the hospital, verbally abused and assaulted two doctors, two nurses, and two female staff members. The group was reportedly angered after being informed that the newborn required treatment at another hospital and alleged that hospital officials had not responded to their phone calls. The entire incident was captured on the hospital's CCTV cameras.
Following the attack, doctors at the hospital boycotted OPD services in protest, while emergency and ICU services continued without interruption. The Vishnunagar Police have launched an investigation based on CCTV footage and witness statements, and the KDMC Commissioner has authorised the affected doctors and staff to file formal complaints.
Congress leader Arif Naseem Khan also condemned the incident, accusing those in power of misusing their influence to intimidate professionals. He described the attack on doctors and healthcare workers as unacceptable and called for strict action against those responsible.
