Will it be difficult for Congress' star candidate Urmila Matondkar to defeat Shetty?

Ahead of the Lok Sabha election in Mumbai, here is everything you need to know about Congress candidate Urmila Matondkar who's contesting from the Mumbai North constituency against BJP's Gopal Shetty

After a successful career in Bollywood as a renowned actress, Urmila Matondkar stepped into active politics ahead of the Lok Sabha election 2019. With no prior experience in Politics, Matondkar joined Congress on March 29 in the presence party President Rahul Gandhi and has been given the candidature to contest LS poll from Mumbai North seat.

In 1980, Matondkar started her career as a child artist in a Marathi film ‘Zaakol’ followed by her first Hindi film – Kalyug – in the year 1981. Matondkar’s first break was in a film called ‘Narsimha’ in 1991. She was immensely praised for her work in Rangeela (1995), Judaai (1997), and Satya (1998).

Congress’ star candidate Matondkar has already started her campaign for LS poll and her fight is against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gopal Shetty. With her celebrity image, people have shown their support in her roadshows and rallies. Recently, Urmila Matondkar held a joint rally in Mumbai with Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who also joined Congress ahead of the national election.

Why Urmila Matondkar joined Politics?

After Urmila stepped into active politics, questions regarding her timing were raised. In an interview with BBC Marathi, Matondkar expressed her concern over the ongoing situation in the country. Highlighting the rising social inequalities, the renowned actress said,

Everything has changed in these five years, hate politics has changed everything. I feel that my democratic rights are being taken away and I have joined politics to oppose the same.

Dealing with Trolls on the internet

Trolls on social media welcomed Urmila Matondkar’s entry into politics, especially after she posted a picture with Rahul Gandhi on the internet. The trolls targeted her decision to join Congress while some commented that Urmila’s acting career has come to a halt and that’s why she has joined politics. Infamous for their insensitivity, the trolls targeted Urmila Matondkar over her marriage life and made communal remarks as her husband is a Kashmiri Muslim.

In recent days, during her campaigns, Urmila Matondkar has learned the art to talk to the media while she has been vocal in her opinion about various political and social issues. Along with carrying out huge rallies, Matondkar is also focusing on campaigning in local areas to meet the public.

Congress star candidate Urmila Matondkar is contesting against BJP candidate Gopal Shetty who is considered as a strong candidate from Mumbai North Constituency. Matondkar, who joined active politics highlighting her secular beliefs, may find difficult to defeat Shetty given that Mumbai North seat is considered a safe and strong seat for the BJP. However, the star candidate fielded by Congress has carried out rallies in every area of the constituency.
