BJP's Colaba MLA Rahul Narwekar has been elected as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly today, December 9, for the second consecutive term. No candidate filed an application from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for the post.
Narwekar had filed his nomination for the position on Sunday, with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, his deputies Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, and senior BJP leaders present in support.
"Balasaheb Bharde was the only Speaker of the legislative assembly to be re-elected to the post twice since 1960 when Maharashtra was formed. After Bharde, Narwekar is the second member of the assembly to receive the honour," the Chief Minister said.
The state had one Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers, one of whom was a lawyer, an expert lawyer like you sat in the chair of the Speaker, there is no doubt that you will do justice to this chair, Devendra Fadnavis expressed confidence on this occasion.
As Speaker, Narwekar's role is expected to be pivotal in deciding whether the opposition can secure the leader of opposition (LoP) position, as it currently holds less than 10% of the seats in the Assembly.
The BJP leader, the Speaker in the 14th assembly for two and a half years, was re-elected from the Colaba assembly seat in Mumbai in the November 20 assembly elections.
