In recent developments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat inaugurated the Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial being developed at the Mayor's residence near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan in Dadar.

Moreover, Industry Minister and Memorial Secretary Subhash Desai, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Transport Minister Anil Parab, Mayor Kishori Pednekar, MP Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Rahul Shewale, Vinayak Raut, MLA Sada Sarvankar, Rohit Pawar, Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte, Mumbai Metropolitan State Development Authority Commissioner R. A. Rajiv, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagarale were also present on the occasion.

As per reports, the ground-breaking ceremony for the Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial was organised keeping in view the coronavirus pandemic due to which only a limited number of guests were present at the physical event. The ceremony was also streamed live.

The Maharashtra Cabinet had earlier approved INR 400 crores for the conversion of the Mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park into the Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial, honouring the late Shiv Sena founder.

Meanwhile, the state government has appointed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the project coordinating mechanism for this memorial scheme. Moreover, all land and environmental permits have been obtained for the monument and the first phase of construction is touted to be completed in 14 months.

According to sources, the place will have a museum, art gallery, research centre, library and an auditorium to commemorate Balasaheb Thackeray. In addition, state-of-the-art technology will be added to the memorial. Under this, the mayor's residence area and interior halls will be beautified and small buildings and underground structures will be constructed.
