Days after submitting 12 names for Municipal Legislative Council (MLC) to Governor, the Uddhav Thackeray government on Monday refuted the reports stating that Raju Shetti and Eknath Khadse were not in contention for nominated Legislative Council seats.

The Thackeray-led government is going ahead with its plan to get Raju Shetti, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana president, and Eknath Khadse elected to the state Legislative Council via the Governor’s quota. However, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has shown confidence in getting Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari's consent by November 21.

Ruling allies Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress have recommended four candidates each to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari for nomination after the tenure of 12 MLCs ended this year in July. They include Shetti and Khadse.

As per rules, these 12 MLCs are chosen for their contribution to the fields of art, literature, culture, academics or cooperative and social work among others.

The Maharashtra government on November 7 had submitted 12 names for nomination to the state legislative council (MLC) to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

However, actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar topped the Shiv Sena’s list, while the former BJP leader Eknath Khadse, who recently joined the party, led the NCP’s list and Sachin Sawant, the spokesperson, has found a spot in the Congress’s list.
