In a major concern amid the fear of rise in COVID-19 cases, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has warned of a strike by them attached to various public and teaching hospitals in the state.

Owing to this, services in government hospitals across the state might get disrupted in the new year as resident doctors of Maharashtra have threatened to go on mass leave from January 2.

MARD has already sent a letter in this regard to the medical education minister Girish Mahajan.

According to the letter, the members of MARD will go on strike from January 2, 2023, if their demands are not discussed and met during the ongoing winter session in Nagpur.

Stating that they raised their demands several times in the last year, the MARD doctor said that they never got a proper response.

As per a note sent out by the central MARD on Monday, there is an urgent need to create 1,432 posts of senior resident doctors so that the system can function smoothly.

The other demands include fixing the "inadequate and dilapidated hostels" in government colleges, filling up of vacancies for the post of associate and assistant professors, immediate disbursal of dearness allowance, implementation of equal pay for all resident doctors and removal of disparity in the pay of senior resident doctors.

"We want equal pay for all resident doctors by removal of disparity in pay,'' said the release.

For those unversed, the MARD was formed for the welfare of the resident doctors and to improve their working environment. Last year, resident doctors across Maharashtra went on an indefinite strike demanding a fee waiver, better hostel conditions and other issues.
