By August 15, 2025, the Maharashtra government will revoke all fraudulent birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals that have been residing illegally in the state, announced Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. While addressing a press conference, Bawankule revealed that 42,000 such cases have already been identified.

"By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis (staying illegally in the state) will be cancelled," said Bawankule.

Most of the fake certificates were reportedly issued in densely populated urban areas such as Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and border districts like Nanded and Dhule. The documents are believed to have been issued over the past 10–15 years, often through collusion with local officials or agents.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had alleged that around 3,997 birth certificates were issued to Bangladeshis who had submitted fake documents. This led to the suspension of two officials who were previously posted in Malegaon by the state government. Last year in 2024, around 716 illegal Bangladeshi residents were arrested and 202 were deported. By March 2024, action was taken against 600 Bangladeshis that were reportedly illegally residing in the state.
