Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has once again become aggressive with regards to the Marathi language, and the leaders of the party have taken a stance on a new issue. This time, MNS has questioned actions taken by the police and government officials on the Marathi number plates used on vehicles.

Several people in Maharashtra, especially the Marathi speaking citizens, are proud of their language, and often use the language on the number plate of their vehicles. RTO has been taking action against those numbers and charging them fine since it is not a part of the protocol. Questioning the same, MNS has raised demand and written to the state government.

The letter was sent by MNS MLA Raju Patil addressed to the state transport minister Anil Parab regarding the matter which mentioned that many people in Maharashtra do not like or agree with the actions taken against vehicles with number plates written in Marathi. The RTO has been levying fines and holding people for the same and this sort of treatment, in a land where Marathi is the mother tongue has led to intense resentment among the people.

He took to Twitter to share the same and stated that the action against vehicles with Marathi number plate should be stopped immediately and the government should allow the same, and make a provision for this to be permitted by law to ensure the emotions of Marathi speaking citizens are not hurt.

Besides him, Former Transport Minister Divakar Rawate also addressed the same recently and at various levels urged for the preservation of Marathi language and Marathi identity. In an interview given in 2016, he had announced his thought on ensuring Marathi plates on all vehicles including two-wheelers. However, keeping the current situation in mind, he has raised concerns against the government in Maharashtra stating that the party is taking action and collecting fines against those who are keeping the 'Marathi identity' alive

Adding more, he said that the state government should have insisted on making sure all number plates are in Marathi across Maharashtra and made a law regarding the same. Instead, the government is trying to conveniently ignore the mother tongue by taking action, and in this way, if the Marathi language is being avoided by the government itself, then the question arises as to how the language will be nurtured and how the identity would be preserved in the future.

A few days ago, MNS had also taken a stance against the online e-commerce portal, Amazon, regarding the Marathi language, stating that the platform does not accept our Marathi language despite being in Maharashtra. With an aim to address the same, MNS vice-president Akhil Chitre had also written a letter to the State Minister for Industries, Mining and Marathi Language, Subhash Desai, demanding attention to this issue.
