The Mumbai airport recently made headlines when Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, accused the Modi government of hijacking the airport from GVK and handing it over to Adani Airport Holdings. However, these allegations have been denied by GVK Vice-chairman G V Sanjay Reddy.

According to GVK vice-chairman G V Sanjay Reddy - the previous owner of Mumbai airport - was facing financial stress and was in need of funds to repay its debt from the acquisition of Bengaluru airport. To raise funds, GVK was exploring various options and found three potential investors who were interested in acquiring the airport. The decision to sell the airport was purely a financial one and was driven by the need to repay its lenders.

GVK had a long history with the Mumbai airport, having acquired it in 2006 as India’s first private airport owner. However, despite this long history, the Mumbai airport was handed over to Adani Airport Holdings in July 2021.

Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi commented on the handover, suggesting that GVK may deny any external pressure in the sale of the airport. However, Reddy strongly refuted these allegations, stating that there was no pressure from any external parties, including the CBI and ED, to sell the airport.

Adani approached GVK with an offer to purchase the airport and promised to conclude the transaction within a month. GVK agreed to the offer on the same terms and conditions. Rahul Gandhi has suggested that the Modi government changed the rules to Adani’s advantage, citing the Sri Lankan energy board chairman's claim that Modi put pressure on him to award Adani a wind power project.
