Congress’s Mumbai unit has undertaken the decision to postpone its December 28 rally at Shivaji Park, Dadar in light of the threat posed by the Omicron variant of COVID-19, highlighted reports.

Earlier, Bhai Jagtap, Mumbai Congress had moved to the Bombay High Court for permission to conduct a rally since the Maharashtra government refused to permit it. However, on Tuesday, December 14, morning, the plea was withdrawn by him.

Whilst the Mumbai police were against it, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) G North Ward had cleared the proposal. The file was waiting for approval from Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Based on accounts, the utilization of Shivaji Park for rallies and public functions is under the control of the Bombay High Court.

Jagtap, based on accounts spoke to reporters at the Congress headquarters in Mumbai at CST on Tuesday and elaborated on how he had discussed the matter with his higher-ups. Adding that considering the increase in cases in the city in the last ten days, they were worried.

Further, he said the government had also discussed the issue with them, therefore, they will organise the rally when the situation improves. Moreover, he remarked that there wasn’t an issue of the government not giving permission.
