Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, a compound wall collapsed in Malad East on Tuesday morning, causing 21 deaths and leaving at least 75 people injured. The incident took place at Kurar village, Pimparipada in Malad East.  

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut refrained from holding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) responsible for the same.  Labelling this incident as an “accident”, Raut said that it is not BMC’s failure and was an accident which has happened due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai.

There are several illegal constructions in Mumbai and BMC has nothing to do with it. It is an accident. It is because of heavy rainfall,” Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the deceased in Malad wall collapse incident. CM Fadnavis also visited Shatabdi hospital to meet the injured people.

“Pained to know about the loss of lives in Malad Wall Collapse incidence. My thoughts are with families who lost loved ones & prayers for a speedy recovery of injured. ₹5 lakh will be given to the kin of deceased,”  Maharashtra CM tweeted.

The rescue operation at the incident site is underway. Mumbai Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is struggling to rescue people who might be stuck under the debris.
