The political landscape was stirred on Sunday as key political figures voiced their opposition to a recent government decision. Union Minister and BJP leader Narayan Rane, along with senior NCP cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal, expressed strong dissent against the Eknath Shinde government's decision to issue kunbi certificates to approximately 54 lakh Marathas. This move positions Marathas on par with Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in terms of reservations in education and government employment. The decision, announced on the preceding Saturday, has sparked controversy and debate among political circles.

Rane's Disagreement and Potential Resignation

Rane, a prominent member of the Maratha community, articulated his opposition, citing concerns over the potential demoralization of Marathas and the risk of igniting unrest among OBC groups. To address this issue, he has planned a press conference for Monday at the YB Chavan Centre, consciously avoiding the BJP's state office. This decision seems to stem from a reluctance to cause discomfort within the BJP, as Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, a fellow party member, supports the decision. The situation has led to a predicament for other Maratha leaders in the BJP and has fueled speculation about Rane's potential resignation from the Union council of ministers.

Bhujbal's Strategy and Legal Challenge

In a parallel development, Bhujbal, who heads the All India Samata Parishad, called for a meeting with leading OBC figures to formulate a legal challenge against the government's decision. His resistance puts Chief Minister Shinde in a tricky position, as Bhujbal's significant standing among the OBCs makes it difficult for the CM to dismiss him. Further complicating the situation, senior OBC leader Prakash Shendge and advocate Gunratan Sadavarte are preparing for a legal response to the decision.

Chief Minister Shinde's Firm Stance Amidst Criticism

Despite the mounting opposition, Chief Minister Shinde remains steadfast in his decision. He reassured the public that the economic status of the Maratha community is being thoroughly examined by four lakh government employees, aiming to prove the community's backwardness. Shinde confidently stated that the evidence gathered would withstand legal scrutiny and emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring fair and equitable treatment for all communities.
