Stand off in standing committee meeting over doctors' strike

Stand off in standing committee meeting over doctors' strike

Thursday's civic standing committee meeting ended in impasse with the Opposition claiming that the civic administration was not taking the issue of striking doctors seriously.

14 topics on the agenda were discussed but the issue of doctors was not considered. BJP group leader Manoj Kotak and Prabhakar Shinde took a dig at the BMC stating, BMC is not taking any action to stop the strike by the doctors.

Meanwhile, Congress Group Leader Ravi Raja said over 260 surgical operations are on hold due to the strike. He claimed that  58 people have died owing to the strike. There will not be any standing committee’s meeting until docs call off the strike stated Yashwant Jadhav, the leader of the opposition.

Recent attacks on the resident doctors in civic hospitals have infuriated the doctors' community, propelled by continued attacks on city doctors even yesterday. The High Court too castigated the doctors, saying they should resume duties, while directing the government to ensure proper protection for the doctors.

With the State Government and Court both not in favour of the doctors, the opposition in the BMC feels the civic administration should be doing more about the issue.
