After Maharashtra Assembly passed the Maratha reservation bill granting the community 16 per cent reservation, Other Backward Class (OBC) activists have expressed their disappointment over the same saying that the Maratha community will be provided reservation under OBC category. The OBC activists said that they will yet again be enslaved.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tabled the ATR on Maratha reservation proposing 16 per cent reservation to the community as suggested by State Backward Class Commission report. The bill was passed in Maharashtra Assembly after a long wait. However, the OBC communities are protesting at Azad Maidan over the same.
The OBC leaders opined that as per the government statistics Maratha population across Maharashtra is 32 per cent. Defying the same, the protestors said that the figure is misleading. The figure includes the Kunbi caste also and they have already got reservation under OBC category.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced that Maratha reservation will be provided under a new category Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC). However, if this happens, it will violate the Supreme Court’s order which doesn’t allow the government to provide 50 per cent reservation. Therefore, the government will provide the reservation from OBC quota,” said the protesting OBCs.
The agitation has been carried out by OBC Struggle Coordinator Committee President Chandrakant Bavkar with their major demand from the government to not provide reservation to the Maratha community under OBC category.
