Pawar as consensus candidate in President's poll: Sonia Gandhi launches campaign

None other than Congress president Sonia Gandhi is making efforts to launch NCP president Sharad Pawar as the ‘consensus candidate of the opposition parties’ for President’s election scheduled to be held in July 2017.

As per sources, Sonia Gandhi has reportedly talked to Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati on this subject. Though all these parties were badly defeated in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the count of their votes is important in the President’s election. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is supposed to approach Trinamul Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav in this connection.

On the other hand, leaders of the Left parties have already shown their support to the candidature of Sharad Pawar in President’s election.
Though Sharad Pawar repeatedly stated that he was not in the race for President’s post giving the reason of less number of votes of his party, he has suggested unopposed election of the President. By doing this, Sharad Pawar had kept his name in the race. Mumbai Live had reported this in a news report published on April 24. Soon after this report, Pawar had met Congress president at ’10 Janpath’. And coincidently, Gandhi has started a discussion with opposition leaders since then.
As per a source close to Gandhi family, Sharad Pawar has shown interest in the post of Vice-President. Pawar, whose aspiration to become prime minister did not come into reality, has shown his political acumen every now and then. Pawar’s famous power game is awaited by the political analysts and the common people.
