Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla recently launched Sansad TV on the occasion of International Day of Democracy.

While addressing the event, the PM lauded the transformation of the channel associated with the Parliament in accordance with rapidly changing times, especially when the 21st century is bringing revolution through dialogue and communication. He termed the launch of Sansad TV as a new chapter in the story of Indian democracy and in the form of Sansad TV, the country is getting a medium of communication and dialogue which will become a new voice of the nation’s democracy and people’s representative. He also greeted Doordarshan for completing 62 years of its existence.

Noting that today is also International Day of Democracy, the Prime Minister remarked that when it comes to Democracy, India’s responsibility is more as India is the mother of democracy. Democracy for India is not just a system, it is an idea. Democracy in India is not just a constitutional structure, but it is a spirit. Democracy in India is not just a collection of streams of constitutions, it is our life stream, he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted the role of the media in the context of 75 years of independence when both glory of the past and promise of the future are before us. He said when the media takes up issues like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, that reaches the people with great speed. He suggested that the media can play a role in disseminating the efforts of the people during Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav by planning 75 episodes on the freedom struggle or bringing out special supplements to mark the occasion.

"In the rapidly changing times, the role of media and TV channels is also changing very fast. The 21st century is bringing a revolution especially through communication and dialogue. In such a situation, it becomes natural that the channels associated with our Parliament should also transform themselves according to these modern systems. I am happy that today a new beginning is being made in the form of Sansad TV. I have also been told that Sansad TV in its new avatar will also be available on social media and OTT platforms, and will also have its own app. With this, our parliamentary dialogue will not only be connected with modern technology, but it will also increase its reach to the common man," he added.

Talking about the centrality of content, the PM said while it is said that ‘content is king, in his experience "Content is Connect." He explained that, when one has better content, people automatically engage with it and when the Parliament is in session, debates are held on diverse subjects, so there is so much for the youth to learn. Members of Parliament  also get inspiration for better conduct, better debate inside the Parliament when the country watches them.

Emphasising further, he said, "When Parliament is in session, debates are held on diverse subjects, and there is so much for the youth to learn. When our honorable members also know that the country is watching them, they also get inspiration for better conduct, better debates inside the Parliament. This also increases the productivity of Parliament, and the public interest works also become popular. Therefore, it is very important that people connect with the proceedings of the House, no matter where they are in the country they should become a part of the activities of the House. Therefore, Sansad TV will also have to design its programs keeping in view the interests of the people, especially the youth. For this, attention will have to be paid to the language; interesting and engaging packages will become mandatory."
