Amid the discourse over the issue of providing free electricity to people in Maharashtra, Economist HM Desarda on Wednesday said that providing free electricity till 100 units of power was achievable.

Earlier, Maharashtra Power Minister Nitin Raut had stated that the state government was taking into consideration the proposal to provide free electricity up to 100 units in domestic settings.

However, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar raised questions over the feasibility of the proposal to provide free electricity up to 100 units in Maharashtra.

Reacting to this, HM Desarda said that by following the Delhi government pattern, Maharashtra government can make the electricity 'free of cost' for domestic users if they consume power up to 100 units. The poorer sections of the society will benefit from it, Desarda added.

“Only 5 per cent consumers fall in the poor category in Maharashtra while people belonging to other strata can bear these expenses without any major burden,” Economist HM Desarda was quoted by the PTI.

The demand to have free electricity in Maharashtra comes after Delhi government successfully managed to provide the same up to 200 units.

On Wednesday, the AAP was re-elected in Delhi and managed to win 62 seats in the assembly polls while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 8 seats and Congress remained on zero.
