The widows must be referred to as ‘Ganga Bhagirathi’ proposed by Women and Child Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha. On Wednesday, he wrote to his department’s principal secretary mentioning the proposal which went viral on social media.

He wrote to PM Modi

In the letter, Lodha mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his concept of referring to people with disabilities as “divyang” which garnered respect.

“The society’s outlook towards ‘divyang’ people has drastically changed,” the BJP leader noted.“Prepare a detailed proposal for a discussion on the use of the word ‘Ganga Bhagirathi’ for widows on similar lines.”

Supriya Sule slammed Lodha

NCP Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule termed the decision as painful, and said that it must be scrapped. “While deciding on such a sensitive issue the government should have consulted NGOs, individuals and organisations working for welfare of widows,” she said.

The Congress called the BJP’s thought process as ‘Manuvadi’ adding that the party is attempting to demean widows.
