Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Sunday, July 11, suggested the use of alternate fuels -- ethanol, CNG and LNG -- to bring respite from surging petrol prices. He added that rising petrol prices are now agitating people.

During the inauguration of India's first private LNG facility plant in Nagpur, Gadkari said that the petrol price is a big problem in the country and the people are facing a crucial problem.

The minister further mentioned that the consumer will now have the choice at the petrol pump, whether they want petrol or ethanol.

His remarks came at a time when the petrol prices across the nation have crossed INR 100 per litre.

Moreover, speaking about the benefits of ethanol as vehicle fuel, Gadkari said its use would help save at least INR 20 per litre despite its lower calorific value compared to petrol, said the report. In addition, the rate of petrol will be more than INR 110/litre while the rate of ethanol will be INR 60 per litre, the minister added.

He further pointed that in our economy, we are spending INR 8 lakh crores on the import of petrol diesel and petroleum products which is a big challenge.

Meanwhile, talking about flex engines, Gadkari said that decision will be taken in three months making it mandatory for automobile manufacturers particularly four-wheelers and two-wheelers to make flex engines.

He stated that several countries like the USA, Canada and Brazil already have them and adding that the cost of the vehicle will remain the same whether it is a petrol or a flex engine.

Petrol price was increased by up to 34 paise on July 12. With this, the retail price of petrol in Mumbai crossed INR 107.20 for a litre.
