Serum Institute fire: Sharad Pawar visits Pune and reviews present situation

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday, January 23, visited the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune, where a major fire had broken out two days ago, killing five persons.

Pawar visited the affected building around noon and took stock of the situation along with SII CEO, Adar Poonawalla.

Taking it twitter, Pawar shared, "Visited the Serum Institute in Pune along with Adar Poonawalla and reviewed the present situation there, after the unfortunate fire incident."

Besides, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had visited the SII to inspect the fire site on Friday, January 22. Thackeray had said that a probe into the incident was on and whether the fire was an accident or sabotage will be known after it.

Earlier, Sharad Pawar had said that the fire was an accident and that there was absolutely no doubt about the integrity of scientists working with the Pune-based vaccine major.

Five men died in the fire that broke out in a five-storey building in the Serum Institute's Manjari premises on Thursday, January 21.

The SII confirmed that it has suffered losses to the tune of INR 1,000 crores due to the devastating fire. However, Poonawalla has confirmed that the incident will not affect the production and supply of the Covishield vaccines.

The SII has also announced INR 25 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the fire incident.
