Shiv Sena (UBT) has expressed its angst against the decision of Election Commission of India’s (ECI) to recognise Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as the real NCP. Shiv Sena (UBT) Leader Sanjay Raut, speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, said that the EC has stabbed democracy in the back.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray slammed the ECI and termed the poll body as 'entirely compromised' and said it has once again proven to be a ‘fraudulent organisation.’

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Raut stated that injustices experienced by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray have never been seen in history.

The only two political groups that stood up for the Marathi "asmita" (identity) and spoke out against injustice in Maharashtra, he claimed, were the Shiv Sena and the NCP.

The Election Commission has stabbed democracy in the back, Raut stated.

The matter has been handed over to Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, said Raut, referring to the ongoing disqualification proceedings against NCP MLAs filed by the two rival factions.

He also challenged Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister, to form their own parties and stand before the public.

He said that the real Shiv Sena is where there are Thackerays, and the real NCP is where there is Sharad Pawar.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Aaditya Thackeray posted, “When the election commission itself starts to legitimise theft, you know that democracy is doomed. The election commission has now once again proved to be the fraud that it is, Entirely Compromised (EC). They are now showing everyone that we aren't a free and fair democracy anymore.”

On February 6, the NCP’s internal conflict was resolved by the Election Commission in favour of the petitioner Ajit Pawar-led group. In a major ruling that may impact the upcoming polls, the poll panel gave the Ajit Pawar faction the NCP name and the clock symbol.

The Sharad Pawar faction was given a one-time opportunity by the Commission to submit three preferences and a name for their new political entity. The concession must be used by February 7, 2024, at 3 pm.

After nearly ten hearings spanning more than six months, a verdict was reached.

The poll panel stated that standards of the petition's maintainability, such as those pertaining to the party constitution's goals and objectives, organisational and legislative majorities, and tests of the party constitution itself, were followed in reaching its judgement.

The camp of Sharad Pawar, however, declared that the party would contest the election body's ruling.

The daughter of NCP founder Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule, claimed that 'Adrishya Shakti' was coordinating these events around the country and that UBT (Shiv Sena) had faced a similar choice due to a divide inside the party.

She said she believes that what transpired with the Shiv Sena is also happening to them now. This isn't a new order. The content is unchanged; only the names have changed. She said that they're going to battle and will fight in the Supreme Court, without a doubt.
