According to the latest reports, on Thursday, March 3, the Supreme Court directed the Maharashtra government and the State Election Commission to not act on the interim report of the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC).

The said interim report recommended a grant of 27 per cent for the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota in local body elections. The judiciary added that the local body elections be conducted in the absence of OBC reservation. The Supreme Court rejected the report on the basis of “lack of rationale” and “absence of contemporaneous data.”

In the aftermath of this, the state government called a cabinet meeting to discuss the future course of action. Based on accounts, the Maharashtra government chaired a cabinet meeting after Supreme Court refused to accept the interim report filed by the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission which recommended the restoration of a 27 per cent reservation for OBC in local body elections.

OBC welfare minister Vijay Wadettiwar was quoted in accounts elaborating on how they will explore all possible options to restore it. The MSBCC’s interim report supported the state’s 27 per cent quota for OBCs in local body elections. They also concluded that the actual population of the backward class in the state is greater at nearly 38 per cent.
