Samant who was earlier scheduled to address the grievances of the teachers, students, and parents alike at the Nehru Science Centre, Worli in Mumbai, has cancelled the Janata Darbar.

The State Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant on Sunday, February 21, informed that he has cancelled the Janata Darbar that was scheduled for Monday.

This comes after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray banned political, social, and religious gatherings in view of the rising number of cases of coronavirus. The CM stated that he will monitor the situation for 8-15 days and decide on a lockdown further adding that several parts of Maharashtra like Amaravati, Yavatmal will be put under restrictions starting from Monday.

Samant was earlier scheduled to address the grievances of the teachers, students, and parents alike at the Nehru Science Centre, Worli in Mumbai.

In the recent past, many state ministers like Rajesh Tope, Jitendra Awhad, Yashomati Thakur have been infected by COVID-19. The state of Maharashtra has been experiencing a spike in cases of coronavirus with several districts including Mumbai facing the threat of another lockdown.

On Saturday, 6,281 people tested positive for COVID-19 with the death rate witnessing a surge as well. On the other hand, Mumbai has also been a witness to the major spurt of COVID-19 reporting 897 new cases in a day.

According to the officials of Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the next 15 days are crucial for Mumbai with the active cases increased by nearly 29 per cent in the state. Furthermore, the Centre has observed that the two states account for 77 per cent of total active cases of coronavirus in the country, and has asked the respective state governments to ramp up their efforts in place for overall testing.
