The Benchmark Indices End Flat, Metal Stocks Outperform

The benchmark indices ended flat post a highly volatile trading session.

At close, the Sensex was down 28.73 points or 0.05 per cent at 54,525.93, while the Nifty was up 2.15 points or 0.01 per cent at 16,282.25.

About 1007 shares advanced, 2123 shares declined and 131 shares remain unchnanged.

On the Nifty 50 index, Tata Steel (3.83 per cent), JSW Steel (3.73 per cent), IOC (2.35 per cent), Hindalco (2.27 per cent) and NTPC (2.27 per cent) were the top gainers for the day, while Shree Cements (-2.10 per cent), Bajaj Auto (-1.86 per cent), Kotak Mahindra (-1.80 per cent), Sun Pharma (-1.74 per cent) and ICICI Bank (-1.05 per cent) were the top losers for the day.

On the sectoral front, Nifty Metal index rose 3 per cent and Nifty Energy index rose over 1 per cent. The pharma index lost over 1 per cent to end in red.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices lost 0.22 per cent and 0.83 per cent respectively.
