Western Railway (WR) inaugurated its first 'restaurant-on-wheels' for suburban network at the Andheri station on Tuesday, January 16.

The contract of managing the unique air-conditioned facility has been given to M/s OAM Industries, better known by their brand name – Haldiram’s.

In an official statement, Sumit Thakur, the chief spokesperson for WR, highlighted the innovative concept of repurposing old unserviceable coaches into stylish dining spaces. The ingenious concept revolves around converting old unserviceable coaches into swanky joints.

The objective is to enhance the dining experience for commuters. The transformation of the retired coach into a state-of-the-art restaurant, complete with an attached kitchen, was completed at the Andheri station.

Besides multi-cuisine food, the joint's star attraction will be the sweets and snacks, for which the company is well-known globally. With a capacity to seat 48 patrons at a time, the restaurant will function round the clock, including a takeaway counter facility. Additionally, a diverse, multi-cuisine menu will be available to cater to the culinary preferences of rail travelers.

The work of other 'restaurant-on-wheels' is underway at the Borivali and Bandra stations.

The overall contract value of these three facilities will contribute ₹5.94 crore as part of non-fare revenue, said an official.

The plans are afoot to replicate the move at Surat, Bandra Terminus, Valsad, Lower Parel and Vasai Road stations in future.

Meanwhile, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Nagpur are both equipped with a restaurant-on-wheels, facilitated by Central Railway (CR). These locations have collectively attracted approximately 1,25,000 and 1,50,000 visitors, respectively. Shivaji Sutar, the Chief Public Relations Officer of CR, mentioned that the CSMT venue welcomes around 250 visitors on weekdays and 350 on weekends.

Last year, in November, Pune division opened its second ‘restaurant-on-wheels’.
