Being a woman is tough and when you are a Muslim woman, you have to be in your veil. There are many women who don't wear a burqa and are also leading good lives.

What comes to your mind when you hear about Muslim women? Burqa (veil), fully covered and handling domestic chores. This is almost the same story of every Muslim woman (barring a few exceptions). The very exception you will get to witness at Yari Road’s Mehfil-e-Saani-e-Zahra or Zaib Palace mosque, where Shia women impart knowledge about the Quran and Islamic teachings. Uzma is one such scholar who dons the role of Ulema.

Maulana Babri, Uzma's husband said that his wife preaches about the role of women in Islam. He believes that educating women is equivalent to educating a family, and educating a family is equal to educating a society. He added that Ulema tries to preach about the need to find a balance between ‘deen’ (knowledge of religion) and ‘duniya’ (world).

Talking about the same, Uzma said that she also conducts classes on Quran at the mosque and teaches girls and women on how to pray and how to follow Islamic rules.

One of the Yari road residents, Fatima Ali, pointed out that many mosques do not allow women to offer sermons but this mosque helps in uplifting women.

Maulana Ather Ali of Mohammed Ali Road’s Minara Masjid has also welcomed the move. They don't allow women to offer sermons but have appointed women to the executive board of the 'All India Muslim Personal Law Board' who deliver speeches on microphones from behind a purdah.

This move has impressed many. One of them is Dr. Zeenat Shaukat Ali, Director General of the World Institute of Islamic Studies for Dialogue and Organisation of Mediation and Gender Justice (Wisdom Foundation). She is hoping that other mosques will follow this move taken by Yari Road’s mosque, as she believes that this practice would boost women’s confidence and everyone would eventually understand that the religion and liberation go hand in hand.
