The excitement for Holi is high, especially among children. Whether it is buying pichkaris or stocking up on different colours and water balloons, to gorging on delicious sweets. However, it is crucial to take a few precautions so that it can be safe and enjoyable for everyone involved, especially children.

Dr Asmita Mahajan, Consultant Neonatologist and Pediatrician, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim - A Fortis Associate, Mumbai shares tips on how to do just that.

  • When playing Holi, children should wear protective gear, to protect their eyes, skin, and hair. Wear a layer of oil or petroleum jelly so that there is a protective layer between the skin and the colours. This can be washed off easily afterwards. Make children wear swimming goggles to protect their eyes from the colours. Also, make them wear full-sleeved clothing so that there is a layer of extra protection.
  • When children are outside playing, they tend to lose track of time. Since it is quite hot outdoors, there is always a risk of dehydration – that is why kids and adults must remain hydrated. Dehydration is a real risk, and you must take all the required measures to avoid a case of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
  • While playing Holi for long hours is tempting, staying soaked in colours and water can be dangerous. Limit the hours of playing Holi so that there are no negative health repercussions.
  • Teach children to play Holi mildly and politely. Encourage kids to use the colour pichkaris instead of balloons to avoid hurting others. If using balloons never aim directly at other kids.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts including contacts of your doctor, ambulance, and nearby hospitals. If your child is playing Holi with a bunch of his friends, be sure you have the contact numbers of their friend’s parents as well.
  • Ask your children to stay away from strangers and play Holi only with their family and friends.

Taking the above precautions can go a long way in ensuring that you and your family have a safe and happy Holi.
