The performers wanted Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code to be abolished and were hopeful that the Supreme Court works out the decision in their favour

Rainbow Voices Mumbai (RVM), India’s first and only LGBTQ choir performed in Mumbai to unite voices for the community on Saturday. They tweaked songs to convey a transition from confinement and isolation to freedom and liberty. Vinod Philip, the founder of RVM mentioned that this performance was an attempt to fight ignorance against the LGBTQ community in society.

Rainbow Voices Mumbai, were formed in 2014 and offer support for LGBTI people in India and raise awareness around LGBTI rights. Homosexual activity remains illegal in India under Section 377 of the country’s penal code. The choir is championing the work of local advocates in their efforts to overturn this law.

The choir comprises of 40 members, hailing from different parts of the country, also including around 10 individual members from LGBTQ choirs from US, UK, Australia, and other countries who performed in the group. 

Performers echoed that they wanted Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code to be abolished, and were hopeful that the Supreme Court’s decision to review it would work in their favour.
