Mahalaxmi Temple in South Mumbai is about to receive a makeover with the unveiling of the "holistic pilgrim facility" project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This project will enhance the overall experience of the temple's visitors. It will address crowd management and provide better accessibility to the sacred site.

The project's objective is to create a harmonious space where pilgrims can connect with the temple's spiritual essence. The plans and drawings are expected to be revealed in 15 days.

The architecture of the temple will be designed by Abha Narain Lambah and consultant Shashank Mehendale. Deepak Kesarkar, the guardian minister, will oversee this project. The deputy municipal commissioner, Zone 1, Sangita Hasnale, will take charge of the project's on-ground implementation.

The temple will take an innovative approach to tackle the temple's accessibility challenges. Currently, it has poor accessibility for vehicles. To mitigate this, the coastal road will be used to streamline temple entry and exit points. It will also have emergency exits.

To make it visually appealing, the project will have a garden along the coastal road. This garden will help motivate the crowd. It will also provide pilgrims with spaces for relaxation. There will be screening rooms and restrooms in the garden area, too.

The project's design will be divided into three crucial parts: the street, temple steps, and reclaimed space. This division will ensure that every aspect of the pilgrim experience is enhanced. Street signage and Prasad booths will be aligned to create a seamless flow for visitors. Additionally, Maheshwari Mansion, another entrance block, will provide accessible entry for the elderly and disabled.

The introduction of an entrance courtyard and a lift to the temple sanctum replaces the steep steps. This will make the temple more accessible. The reclaimed space behind the temple is being transformed into multiple entry and exit points. The makeover will have no impact on the temple's original structure.

Notably, the seaside road serves as another point of entrance. With a focus on minimal labour requirements, the makeover aims to bring about a profound change without causing significant disruption. The project will also extend its impact to the surrounding neighbourhood. It will rationalise shopfronts and footpaths. A pedestrian bridge connecting the garden to the temple will be introduced too.
