The Maharashtra government is slated to provide 10 sanitary napkins priced at INR 1 for women below the poverty line as well as those who hail from self-help groups, reports stated. According to accounts, the scheme will commence on August 15 which is anticipated to benefit 60 lakh women. The initiative will cost the state INR 200 crore yearly.

Based on narratives, the state has highlighted the lack of hygiene during menstruation as a cause of disease and death. On the other hand, it has been reported that in the state 66 per cent of women utilised sanitary napkins. This when juxtaposed to the number at the national level is 12 per cent.

Reports suggest that in rural Maharashtra, a mere 17 per cent of women had access to sanitary napkins. Presently, the Maharashtra health department has the initiative to offer kits with six sanitary napkins at INR 6 to girls under the age of 19 who are below the poverty line.

It is believed that because of the constrained nature of the scheme, it does not reach all the women who need sanitary napkins.

Similarly, in Mumbai, doctors say that mothers face health predicaments such as stress, anxiety, obesity, depression, urinary tract infections (UTIs), insomnia, acid reflux, shoulder pain, lower back pain, and diabetes mellitus.
