Navi Mumbai has been recognised as the best city among the 'C' category municipal corporations in Maharashtra by the state government’s Environment and Climate Change department.

On the other hand, the city has secured the second position among all big city municipal corporations in the A, B, and C categories. This award was presented during a ceremony held on World Environment Day.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), led by municipal commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, received a significant prize money of INR 8 crore. The honour was presented by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, at NCPA in an award ceremony. Assembly speaker Rahul Narvekar and several ministers were also present along with him.

Expressing gratitude, Narvekar acknowledged the immense support of Navi Mumbai's eco-conscious citizens in achieving this recognition. Efforts to reduce air pollution and promote environmentally friendly practises have been at the forefront in Navi Mumbai.

The city has been actively working towards establishing an effective solid waste management system, encouraging the usage of eco-friendly vehicles, expanding the green belt, and eliminating single-use plastic items.

Over the past two years, Navi Mumbai has planted over 2,00,000 trees. To optimise urban space and maximise the benefits of afforestation, the Miyawaki technique has been employed. Moreover, Navi Mumbai has emphasised the conservation of various elements of nature, including land, air, water, fire, and sky.

In the Amrut city category, which includes cities with populations ranging from 3 to 10 lakhs, Panvel Municipal Corporation has secured the third position. For this achievement, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been awarded a prize of INR 5 crore. Ganesh Deshmukh, the municipal commissioner of Panvel, accepted the award on behalf of the corporation.
