Amid the ongoing communalism across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as many as nearly 60 per cent of non-Marathi respondents in the financial capital city have said that they have never been treated badly by local Marathis.

A survey was conducted by the IANS-CVoter, where a question – “When you are outside your home, have you or any of your family members ever been treated badly by local Marathis?” was posted to non-Maharashtrians. A survey of about 1,300 residents of Maximum City, comprising equally those born in Maharashtra and those born in other states.

This development came as Mumbai celebrated 62 years of becoming the capital city of the state in Maharashtra Day, which is celebrated on May 1.

Meanwhile, the survey also revealed that 59.9 per cent have never been treated badly while 22.5 per cent said sometimes they have been treated badly, and 10.4 per cent said they have been often treated badly.

It also came to light that the most admired leader from the state is Dr B. R. Ambedkar, followed by Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

While 35.2 per cent of non-Marathis picked Ambedkar, 32.3 per cent Marathis said he was their first choice. Incidentally, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was not born inside modern-day Maharashtra but in modern-day Madhya Pradesh.

The second most admired leader was Balasaheb Thackeray, with 15.3% and 17.1% of non-Marathis and Marathis choosing him respectively.

Sharad Pawar don’t seem to inspire Mumbaikars as 4 per cent of local Marathis voted for Pawar while a meagre 4.5 per cent of non-Marathis opted for him. Surprisingly, neither does the recently deceased Lata Mangeshkar who garnered about 3.5% of votes.

Almost 11% of non-Marathis opted for (social activist) Anna Hazare while just about 4% of the Marathi manoos chose him.

The survey also pointed out that both Marathis and non-Marathis picked ‘pav bhaji’ as their favourite cuisine. Additionally, all of them identified safety as one of the best things about Mumbai.
