A good samaritan in Mumbai is helping people get oxygen cylinders at a time when obtaining oxygen comes down to either privilege or sheer luck. Shahnawaz Sheikh has been working around Malad and has earned the name of ‘Oxygen Man’ for his works towards helping the people in the locality.

He is known to deliver oxygen to patients on a phone call while his team also has a control room where people can get all the necessary information about oxygen cylinders during these tumultuous times.

Since he was running out of money to help those in need, Shahnawaz said that he recently sold his Ford Endeavour valued at ₹22 lakh to purchase 160 oxygen cylinders.

In a conversation with a news agency, Shahnawaz said he decided to work as an oxygen supply agent after his friend’s wife died in an auto-rickshaw due to lack of oxygen.

His work carries on as the condition right now is more severe than it was last year. He said that while he was receiving around 50 calls for oxygen in January 2021, he is now witnessing around 500 to 600 calls per day.

The team has helped over 4,000 people so far while providing the necessary assistance on using the cylinders. Most of the patients then deliver the cylinder back to their control rooms, he said. Shahnawaz is one of the many unsung heroes who work for society with no expectation of monetary gain.
