With no end in sight for the rising fuel rates, the prices have hiked for the fifth time this month today, July 7, after a day's hiatus.
The recent hike has Delhi and Kolkata crossing the INR 100-a-litre mark while on the higher end, cities like Mumbai have blown past the INR 106-a-litre line.
This is the first time that the fuel is retailing above INR 100 in all metro cities.
In Mumbai, petrol is being sold at INR 106.25 per litre, whereas diesel has reached INR 97.09 per litre. If the rates continue to rise at this speed, the diesel prices in the nation’s financial capital will also soon touch the INR 100-mark.
Due to the fuel hike across Maharashtra, citizens have been demanding for the Mumbai local travel to resume for ordinary people.
While the national capital’s petrol price stands at INR 100.21 per litre and diesel prices at INR 89.53 per litre. In Kolkata, the price of petrol and diesel is INR 100.23 per litre and INR 92.50 per litre.
This was the 37th hike since 4 May when oil companies revised the rates after observing an 18-day hiatus during assembly elections in five states and a UT.

Since then, the price of petrol has risen by INR 9.81 per litre and diesel by INR 8.74 a litre.
Moreover, Bhopal, back in May, become the first state capital to breach the INR 100-mark in petrol prices. It was followed by Jaipur, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
Petrol now costs over INR 100 in 16 states and UTs -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Ladakh, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Sikkim, Delhi and West Bengal.
