Some housing societies across Mumbai have reportedly decided to show their support for the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019), NRC (National Register of Citizens) and NPR (National Population Register).

Posters are being put up at several housing societies in the city, including at Mulund, Borivli, and Thane. Moreover, WhatsApp Groups of housing societies are seeing pro-CAA-NRC-NPR posts being circulated.

Office-bearers of a Thane residential complex in Vasant Vihar said that a lot of “misleading information” was being spread about the CAA on social media and they felt the need to show support for the controversial law(s). Society members also said that the issue has been given a religious and political angle on social media, adding that they encourage healthy discussion on the matter by the residents of the complex.

Former BJP MP, Kirit Somaiya said that the party had undertaken a campaign in the city to “create awareness and commitment” on the CAA. “The main thrust of the BJP campaign is to expose a strategic negative campaign by opposition parties and by a section of the society. What the opposition is doing is engineering a wrong campaign to create a myth, a fear psychosis among a particular community and so-called liberals,” he added.

A highrise residential building in Borivli West has pro-CAA banners on both of its gates. One of its residents said “Yes, we are silently making a strong statement. If opponents of these laws can hold rallies and dharnas, can we not at least put up banners? Citizenship has several benefits. Outsiders keep coming to India without fear of being stopped. Why are their native countries not developed so they don’t feel the need to migrate? I agree some Indians will be inconvenienced by CAA too, but things will settle down in a few months.”
