Maharashtra government will make a provision of ₹5 crore for the welfare of the Transgender community by bringing the long pending Transgender Welfare Board (TWB).

Minister of State for Social Justice Dilip Kamble told PTI that the Board will be set up in a month’s time. The board will look after education, employment, housing, and health schemes for transgenders and will also protect their constitutional and human rights. The minister added that Maharashtra will be the first state to have such a Board.

In 2014, the Board was conceptualised by the previous government and was mentioned in the third women’s policy of the state government which was accepted by the cabinet in 2013.

Dilip Kamble, Minister of State for Social Justice, told Indian Express,

Since welfare schemes for transgenders were implemented by Union Social Justice Ministry, all work related to setting up of the board and implementing welfare schemes for the community was transferred to the state Social Justice department on October 3, 2017, and an amount of ₹5 crore was set aside for the purpose."

In October 2014, the new government took a charge and the procedure of establishing the TWB took a backseat.

Pankaja Munde, Women and Child Welfare Minister told Indian Express,

We want them to be treated honourably and see that they benefit from the government’s welfare schemes."
