In a groundbreaking endeavor catering to the aspirations of Mumbai's emerging athletes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to introduce an Olympic-standard stadium near Mulund's Kalidas Natyagruh. An article in the Indian Express shared more details stating that with an estimated budget of Rs 36 crore, this project is poised to transform the city's sports infrastructure.

State-of-the-Art Facilities in the Pipeline

The planned stadium, expected to be unveiled in 2025, will encompass a range of state-of-the-art facilities designed to foster athletic excellence. Among its features will be an expansive eight-lane 400-meter running track, complemented by separate 100-meter tracks. Additionally, dedicated areas for shotput, discus throw, and hammer throw are on the horizon, along with facilities for long jump, high jump, and javelin throw. Meanwhile, a senior BMC official shed light on the reasoning behind the nominal fee, explaining that the project's maintenance costs are expected to be substantial, particularly due to the installation of a synthetic track using the sandwich system. This fee structure aims to ensure the ongoing upkeep and quality of the grounds, drawing a parallel with the approach employed for swimming pools.

Civic Body Takes the Lead in Development

Recognizing the current void in Mumbai's sports infrastructure, the BMC has taken on the mantle of this ambitious development project. Kishore Gandhi, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Gardens), emphasized that the BMC's goal is to create a world-class athletic stadium accessible to the public. He stated, "The development is currently being undertaken by the BMC to meet international standards, and we will engage specialized agencies for its construction." Currently in the tendering phase, construction is slated to commence in January 2024, with an estimated completion time of 18 months. To enhance the spectator experience, modular grandstands with seating for 566 individuals will be installed. Once completed, the arena will not only host district and national-level tournaments but will also be accessible to the general public for a nominal fee.

A Comprehensive Vision

The scope of this initiative extends beyond the stadium itself. Plans include the construction of a compound wall, a security cabin, and beautifully landscaped lawns, complete with horticultural elements. The official added that lockers and racks for 25 players will be provided, along with a gazebo for visitors, and a dedicated play area for the local community. This ambitious project marks a pioneering milestone for the city of Mumbai. BMC officials have indicated that, depending on the response and the availability of suitable open space, they may explore the possibility of developing a similar arena in the western suburbs in the future. With this initiative, Mumbai's athletes are poised to have access to world-class facilities, potentially opening doors to greater sporting achievements.
