Mumbai: Maha Governor felicitates medallists from Berlin Special Olympics

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais felicitated 20 athletes and coaches from Maharashtra who bagged medals for the country in the 'Special Olympics' at Raj Bhavan Mumbai on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. The Special Olympics were held for the intellectually challenged persons in Berlin in June 2023.


Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the divyang sports persons have done the State and the nation proud by bagging more than 200 medals in the Special Olympics.

He said there was time when India stood at the bottom of the medal table in events like the Olympics. He said, India has now crossed the century of medals in the recently concluded Asian Games held in China.



According to Dr Medha Somaiya, Maharashtra State President of Special Olympic Bharat, 194 athletes from India participated in Special Olympics. Together they won 202 medals for the country. She said the Divyang athletes from Maharashtra won 20 medals in this competition. She informed that contestants from 8 years to 80 years of age participate in the Special Olympics. The Special Olympic Games were held in Berlin in the month of June.


The Governor also felicitated Sports coaches and Unified Partners on this occasion. Area Director Dr Bhagwan Talware, parents, Sports Director and recipients of Special Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallists were present.
