Mumbai Rockets began their Premier Badminton League (PBL) season this year with a win as they won their tie against Delhi Dashers with a comfortable 5-0 margin on December 23. The surprise of the evening was Mumbai’s Shreyanshi Pardeshi (World Number 201) who outplayed World Number 32 Evgeniya Kosetskaya of Russia.

Initially, Pardeshi was a game down but soon she took the matter in her own hands and managed to win the next two games to win the match 12-15, 15-8 and 15-10. Since this was Delhi’s trump match, they ended up losing and also earned the single point for the match.

Prior in the match, Mumbai Rockets started well after their South Korean doubles pair of Kim Gi Jung and Lee Yong Dae won 14-15, 15-12, and 15-9 against their opponents Chai Biao and Wang Sijie.

After which, the baton for victory was carried forward by Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in the men’s singles who beat his rival Tommy Suigarto in straight sets 15-13, 15-7. However, then came the match of the evening, where Indian shuttlers, Number 14, Sameer Verma and Number 20, came face to face. The match began with four consecutive points for Prannoy but then Verma made a ‘change in the strategy’ and won the first match 15-14 and second match 15-9 to continue Mumbai’s winning streak.

The mixed doubles pair of Lee Chia Hsin and Maneepong Jongjit earned Delhi their first point after defeating Lee Yong Dae and Pia Zebadiah 15-11 and 15-12. However, the point was eventually lost after Shreyanshi won the trump game.
