Let’s face it, 2020 has been a forgetful year for millions of Indians. The coronavirus lockdowns started in March, which effectively meant that a large bulk of the population had to stay at home for more hours than usual. This was also a consequence of private companies moving to a work-from-home model, thus reducing contact between people during a deadly pandemic.

One of the unlikely companions for most people during these tough times has been voice assistants like Alexa. The lovable voice assistant turns three on February 15, reaching thousands of new homes since its arrival thanks to the increased adoption of smart voice assistants like the Echo and Echo Dot.

A new report sheds light on some of the most popular questions that Indians asked Alexa during the pandemic year. As with other parts of the world, one of the most popular Alexa commands were “Alexa, I love you” which was said around 19,000 times a day, and “Alexa, marry me” which was said around 6,000 times a day.

Being a cultural icon on its own, Alexa also had some of the wittiest answers to “Alexa, rasodey mein kaun tha?”, making it the most popular question posed to Alexa in 2020. This query averaged around 14,000 times per day in 2020.

The love for music was also a highlight with users requesting more than 17 lakh songs per day. Some of the most requested Bollywood tracks were “Shaitan Ka Saala”, “Muqabla”, and “Aankh Marey” in the past year.

Unsurprisingly, a large bulk of the users also used Alexa to control their smart home appliances like televisions, air purifiers, security cameras, ACs, and so on. The report says that users asked Alexa to control a smart device around 8.6 lakh times per day.

Alexa’s ability to crack a witty joke is also well known. In response to users’ queries, Alexa made a joke up to 9,000 times a day in 2020. Further, Alexa was also requested to laugh along with the customers around 12,000 times a day.

Alexa was reportedly asked to imitate a Bollywood celebrity with a dialogue around 3,000 times per day. Other common questions range from “why do we celebrate Diwali?” to “who has scored the most runs?”.

The report goes on to mention that Alexa managed to answer 86,000 factual questions daily while also answering animal sound requests more than 43,000 times per day using the Wild Planet Skill.

With Amazon integrating Alexa with its standalone shopping app, trends show that the number of people interacting with Alexa on the app has significantly increased. Alexa reportedly answered around 5.8 lakh requests per day on the Amazon app. This includes queries to search for a particular product, finding the best deals, and paying your bills.

Other key highlights:

  • Alexa narrated around 19,000 stories per day in Hindi and English collectively.
  • Customers asked Alexa for “Kavita” over 1000 times a day in 2020.
  • Alexa answered more than 4,000 requests per day during Durga Pooja, Dussehra, and Navaratri festivals by reciting bhajans and playing Aarti songs.
  • Around 3,000 customers asked Alexa to play Shayari as well as works from renowned poets like Mirza Ghalib.
