Mobile application Aarogya Setu has clocked 5 crore (or 50 million) downloads in just 13 days. With this Aarogaya Setu has become word's fastest downloaded app, said NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant.

“Telephone took 75 years to reach 50 million users, radio 38 yrs, television 13 yrs, Internet 4 yrs, Facebook 19 months, Pokemon Go 19 days. Aarogya Setu, India’s app to fight COVID-19 has reached 50 million users in just 13 days-fastest ever globally for an App,” Kant said in his tweet.

Aarogya Setu has been developed by the Indian government for tracking coronavirus patients.

On April 14, during his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged to people to download the app and it seems to have worked. Kant took the opportunity to point out that even Pokemon Go had taken 19 days to reach 50 million installs.

The Aarogya Setu app was launched on April 2 by the government. Program Director and member of the Arogya Setu team, Arnab Kumar said that this app was built within two weeks. He mentioned that the launch of the Singapore-based TraceTogether app gave validation to their idea of Arogya Setu. This app uses a combination of your GPS data as well as Bluetooth to allow contact tracing of affected individuals.

The app was approved by Apple for its App Store within 4 hours, while the Google Play Store approved it within an hour, it is said. Apps and companies have been very supportive of the Aarogya Setu app as well. It is said that the app has already seen 20 million unique users since its arrival earlier this month, although the scale of adoption remains a concern.

Once installed in a smartphone, the app detects other devices with Aarogya Setu installed that come in the proximity of that phone. Since its launch, PM Modi and the government have been constantly encouraging people to download the application.

Seems like people have responded to PM Modi's appeals and have joined the 'Go Corona Go' bandwagon to beat the download record set by Pokemon Go.
