Lava Mobiles has announced what it calls the world’s first smartphone lineup which can be customized and upgraded extensively by the customer. The new MyZ lineup of smartphones can be customized in 66 ways with the ability to increase RAM, storage, front and rear cameras, as well as colour customization. The company says that MyZ phones can also be upgraded post-purchase.

This made-to-order phone will offer the ability to choose between 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, or 6GB of RAM coupled with 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of internal storage. As for the cameras, customers will have the choice between a dual 13+2MP dual or 13MP+5MP+2MP triple rear cameras, and 8MP or 16MP selfie cameras.

Elaborating more on the post-purchase upgrade of MyZ phones, Lava calls this service ZUp. Customers simply have to walk into a Lava service centre and pick the RAM or storage upgrade they need by paying an “incremental charge” for the upgraded components. Though this is a very attractive proposition, it will be interesting to see if the company’s supply chain can keep up with the ever-changing trends of the Indian smartphone market.

All models in the MyZ and ZUp series will feature the MediaTek Helio G35 octa-core processor with stock Android 10 running the software side of things. The company adds that these phones will provide a bloatware-free Android experience to the customers.

All phones in the MyZ lineup will have some common features which include the 6.5-inch HD+ displays with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, a 5,000 mAh battery as well as military-grade durability.

Users can get these smartphones as the Z1, which is the company’s first designed-in-India smartphone, followed by the Z2, Z4, and the flagship Z6.

Pricing and availability

The Lava Z1 is expected to launch on January 26 for ₹5,499 while the Z2 will go on sale starting Jan 11 along with the Z4 and Z6, for ₹6,999, ₹8,999, and ₹9,999 respectively.

Though the company hasn’t specified if the MyZ series of phones will be available via online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart, they will go on sale via the company’s official e-store at lavamobiles.com as well as other online and offline retailers.

Lava Mobiles' first foray into fitness bands

Lava Mobiles also launched its first fitness band/tracker, known as BeFIT, which will retail for ₹2,699 starting Jan 26.
