The Maharashtra cyber cell has issued an advisory regarding the Mitron application, which is an alternative for TikTok. The Maharashtra cyber cell has been asking users to uninstall it, as it is not an 'Indian' app as claimed earlier and has major weaknesses that make your secure information publicly available. The cyber cell had taken to Twitter to state the various reasons why the application is unsafe. It further stated the reasons for the uninstallation of the app from smartphones.

Mitron had earlier been pitched as an Indian alternative to the famous Chinese app TikTok. However, later it was found to be a re-packaged version of the Chinese app that was sourced back to Pakistan. As a consequence, the Maharashtra cyber cell department has asked people, who have installed the app on their phone to uninstall it due to security concerns.

The Maharashtra cyber cell also claimed that Mitron did not use the secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol for the login. This could mean that the hackers could take control of the account and send messages, follow others and even comment on their behalf. Earlier this week, Google Play Store had taken down the application so that no new users can download the app. However, it can again be found in the play store. This advisory is slated to be useful for people who have already downloaded the application on their phone. The app is said to be downloaded by 50 lakh people before Google could take it down from the playstore.

Since the month of May, the application had been downloaded over 50 lakh times and had been garnering more and more downloads. With the growing issue of cybersecurity being under threat, it becomes pertinent for the people to observe all forms of security measures before uploading data on the internet.
