India's first Scorpene class submarine, 'Kalvari' was handed over to the Indian Navy. Built by India's prime shipyard, Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd. or MDL, INS Kalvari(S51) is the first of 6 submarines to be commissioned.

Why is this important?

China's submarine strength is far superior to that of India's and its expansion into foreign waters is no secret for the Asian nations. With an elaborate 30 year plan, India will have developed 24 submarines that will surely check-mate China's advances in the Indian Ocean.

Here are the details

Kalvari is part of the six Scorpene submarines under Project 75 and was designed by French Naval Defense and Energy Company, DCNS. Another six submarines will be built in collaboration with foreign companies, while India indigenously develops 12 more. Next in line is INS Khanderi, built also by Mumbai based MDL and will be followed by INS Karanj.

Interesting weapons onboard

With stealth and precision, the Kalvari is loaded with some serious weaponry. This is what the MDL said about the firepower:

The state-of-the-art technology utilised in the Scorpene has ensured superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimised shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons

More facts!

  • Kalvari is a deadly Tiger Shark, found deep in the Indian Ocean
  • It is named after the original Kalvari which happens to be India's first submarine commissioned in 1967
