Western Railway begins repair work of Bandra-Worli flyover bridge

Taking advantage of the lockdown in Mumbai due to coronavirus, Western Railway has started the repair work for the flyover bridge connecting Bandra and Mahim railway station. The repair work started on Wednesday and is estimated to be concluded by May 1. Western Railway has employed 250 workers to carry out these repairs. Meanwhile, the workers have been directed by Western Railway to follow social distancing regulations while at work. 

Local trains were used by lakhs of travels to commute on a daily basis before the lockdown. As a matter of fact, local train service are also referred to as the 'lifeline of Mumbai'. Prior to the lockdown, rail corporation had to wait till Sunday to carry out any repair work and it would announce a megablock for the same. A megablock usually last for a few hours and often result in work remaining incomplete or not to the satisfaction. 

However, with a lockdown in place, the local train service has been shut down till May 3 and therefore, Railways has enough time to carry out the pending work.

Western Railway reached out to the contractors and asked them to outsource the labourers that haven't gone back to their native place. Along with this, the authorities have also begun the repair of railway tracks over Mithi river, between Bandra and Mahim.

The repair work consists of the installation of new girders, and therefore, it will require a workforce of close to 250 workers. The rail corporation has also provided the workers with two big and eight small cranes along with 18 JCBs to help them in getting the work done faster.
