Provide ₹20,000 crores for national highway works: Maharashtra PWD Minister Ashok Chavan tells Nitin Gadkari

Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday demanded the centre to provide funds worth ₹20,000 crores for national highway works. 

Senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan, who is also the guardian minister of Nanded, demanded ₹20,000 crores for the national highway works while talking to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari via video conferencing. 

“The state is facing various troubles while carrying out the national highway works. A committee should be set up under the chairmanship of the Divisional Commissioner to resolve these issues. Along with this, the central government should provide ₹20,000 crores for the National highways wok in the state,” Ashok Chavan said.

Chavan further stated that the national highway works were moving at a snail’s pace and facing difficulties. Contractors who are not adhering to schedules should be blacklisted, the Maharashtra PWD minister said. 

“Many contractors are not working timely. As a result, the works on national highways is moving at a slow pace while causing traffic problems. The contractors who don’t complete the work in time should be blacklisted,” Ashok Chavan said. 

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has allowed the pre-monsoon-related works to be carried out in the coronavirus affected Mumbai and Pune and amended its revised lockdown guidelines for the same. 

In an order issued by the Maharashtra government, it was announced that all pre-monsoon related works and any other work permitted by the municipal commissioners of Mumbai and Pune will be allowed including the metro rail work. 

Earlier, the Maharashtra government had announced that the industrial activities will be started in districts with zero COVID-19 cases. The government has created three divisions in the state - red, orange, green.
