Maharashtra environment minister Aaditya Thackeray visited BEST headquarters on Monday, June 28. In his visit, the minister pushed for the new campaign for ebills which will save over 2000 trees from being cut annually.

Moreover, Thackeray had earlier expressed his intention to bring about 30 per cent electric buses to BEST in Mumbai in the next five years.

Thackeray said that the BEST should not just promote ebills but procure more electric and environment friendly buses in its fleet and replace those on diesel. The BEST should soon start the smartcard system in a big way as this will eliminate use of paper tickets, he added.

Meanwhile, BEST general manager Lokesh Chandra said that the BEST’s ‘Go Green’ initiative will be popularised through SMS sent to 10.5 lakh consumers in island city.

The transport body will also monitor movement of every bus through vehicle tracking (GPS) to ensure there is more deployment on busy routes, he added.
